NIGERIA CUSTOMS SERVICE FORGES STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS WITH OLD, NEW STAKEHOLDERS IN 2024

On Friday, January 26, 2024, during the International Customs Day Celebration at the Customs Training College, Ikeja, Lagos, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) reaffirmed its commitment to cultivating significantly improved relationships with compliant stakeholders in the year ahead.

The occasion was graced by esteemed dignitaries including the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, a Representative of the Honourable Minister of Trade, Investment and Industries, as well as Chief Executives of key agencies such as the Nigerian Ports Authority, NIMASA, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, and other vital stakeholders.

In his address at the conference themed ‘Customs, Engaging Traditional and New Partners with a Purpose,’ the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, emphasized the alignment of this year’s theme with the service’s core objectives of consolidation, innovation, and collaboration. He underscored the pivotal role these objectives play in guiding the NCS’s actions and operations.

The CGC articulated the NCS’s unwavering dedication to nurturing enhanced relationships with compliant stakeholders throughout the coming year. He stated, “We pledge to foster significantly improved ties with all our stakeholders, particularly those who adhere to our regulations. Genuine partnerships thrive on mutual respect and understanding. Those who uphold compliance and respect our guidelines can expect more seamless and supportive cooperation.”
Furthermore, the CGC unveiled plans for a comprehensive Time Release Study scheduled for February 2024. This initiative aims to optimize customs processes and expedite the release of goods at ports and border stations. He called upon all stakeholders, especially those within the National Trade Facilitation Committee, to actively engage in this strategic endeavor.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, underscored the paramount importance of collaboration in facilitating trade and enhancing revenue generation. He commended the NCS leadership for its proactive approach in streamlining cargo clearance procedures, particularly the transition from physical examinations to the utilization of scanners. The Minister highlighted the potential for increased revenue, enhanced efficiency, and reduced turnaround time at ports.

The Minister reiterated his ministry’s commitment to supporting collaborative efforts with stakeholders in the international trade community, with a focus on sustainable utilization of ocean and coastal resources for economic growth.

The event culminated in the special recognition of internal and external stakeholders through awards presented by the World Customs Organization Headquarters, further affirming the significance of collaborative partnerships in advancing customs operations and trade facilitation.
